Family background, personal history, and
a physical examination will help determine if allergy is the cause of the
symptoms. If allergy is suspected, a specific IgE blood test can
tell for sure.
Specific IgE blood testing measures the amount of IgE
in the blood. It uses one serum sample to rule atopy in or out.
When positive, the test identifies and quantifies the patient's specific
allergic sensitivities. The ImmunoCAP
Specific IgE blood test is considered to be the most accurate,
and is the most commonly used in vitro allergy test. ImmunoCAP
testing is also easy to
perform in a primary care setting, carries no risk of anaphylaxis,
and does not require the patient to discontinue medications prior
to testing.
